Rock Formations of the Great Ocean Road

Known for the infamous rock stacks that rate high on the bucket list of many, this stretch of coastline between Princetown and Warrnambool  provides hidden gems galore. Time is of the essence — that is; you’ll need more of it than you think to really do this place justice.

Set yourself up for a few days in Port Campbell (neighbouring towns Princetown and Peterborough are also great for a little more seclusion) and take your time to explore the lesser known bays and beaches. There’s accommodation to suit any style or budget in the area.

Gibsons Steps

The well-trodden Gibson’s Steps are a short walk from the 12 Apostles Visitor Centre and all 86 of them will land you on the beach (check tides) where you can get up close Gog and Magog, two Apostle-like limestone stacks and wonder at the sheer size of these rock formations that have existed here for eons. Notice the natural geothermal springs seeping from the base of the cliffs at the beach here.

Tip 1:  If you’re visiting the 12 Apostles (you really can’t not) then save it for sunrise or sunset. The morning light on the cliffs is spectacular and watching the backdrop of the sun setting behind the Apostles is a kind of magic you’ll never forget. Dusk and Dawn are also the best times to spot local wildlife — we often see wallabies, kangaroos and echidnas in the area.

Tip 2: Take on a section of the Great Ocean Walk; do some car-shuffling or use a local shuttle service to take on the 101km long distance walk’s final 7km stretch between Princetown to the 12 Apostles. Grab that finish line shot to show your friends (and inspire you to walk the whole 104kms from Apollo Bay next time!)

Loch Ard Gorge

Loch Ard Gorge is stunning and well worth a few hours to explore the whole precinct. The tale of the wreck of the Loch Ard endures as one of our favourite survival stories. From Port Campbell itself the Port Campbell Discovery Walk traverses the cliffs to the West of Port Campbell, revealing stunning views over the township and bay.

From Port Campbell to Warrnambool stick to the coast to explore the beaches and bays — such as The Arch, London Bridge, The Grotto, Boat Bay, Worm Bay, Bay of Martyrs, Bay of Islands, Peterborough beach and Childers Cove. You’re sure to find one all to yourself.
