Playing host to Australia's most recognised coast line and largest volcanic region in Victoria, the Twelve Apostles Coast and Hinterland is located west of Melbourne along the Princes Highway or Great Ocean Road. Port Campbell, centrally located on the Twelve Apostles coast, is a 2 hours and 45 minute drive from Melbourne travelling on the inland route.

Traveling to the Twelve Apostles coast and hinterland can be done via car, bus, train or plane.

By Self-drive

Port Campbell is 229 kilometers away from Melbourne CBD and will take approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes to drive via the inland route or 4 hours and 33 mins via the Great Ocean Road.

The step by step directions below should take you there:

  • Travel from Melbourne city onto the Westgate Freeway
  • Continue onto Princes Freeway
  • Continue onto Geelong Ring Road
  • Continue on Swan Marsh Road at Pirron Yallock
  • Turn left at Speedway Road, Bungador
  • Continue onto Scoots Creek - Carpendeit Road
  • Continue onto Port Campbell Road to Port Campbell

To drive the scenic Great Ocean Road route, turn off the Princes Freeway at the Torquay Exit.

Melbourne Airport

Also known as Tullamarine Airport, is 265 kilometers away from Warrnambool. It is the second busiest airport in Australia. The Melbourne Airport is the nearest Airport to Warrnambool that has both local and International flights. Jetstar, Qantas, Strategic Airlines and Virgin Australia are some of the carriers that the airport accommodates for International flights. They have several local destinations that are provided by carriers such as Rex, Jetstar, Qantas, Skywest Airlines, Tiger Airways and Virgin Australia.

The Avalon Airport

Located just out of Geelong, 203 kilometers from Warrnambool. Avalon Airport services several destinations within Australia through Jetstar, Sharp Airlines and Tiger Airways for scheduled passenger services but it does not accommodate International flights since it only has one runway and was designed to cater for jet aircraft. The Avalon airport is also used for heavy maintenance facility by Qantas, which is Jetstar's parent company.

Warrnambool Airport

Warrnambool is just 85 kilometres from the 12 Apostles with domestic passenger and charter services available from Melbourne's Essendon Airport with Sharp Airlines.

By Public Transport - Train

Train services operated by V/Line are available from Melbourne to Warrnambool, stopping along the way in the Twelve Apostles hinterland towns of Camperdown and Terang. Buses connect at Camperdown and Warrnambool Railway Stations, taking passengers to neighbouring towns. See 'By Bus' for more information.

The Melbourne to Warrnambool train line departs from Southern Cross Station in Melbourne's CBD.

By Public Transport - Bus

Buses operate thought the Twelve Apostles coastal & hinterland region, connecting with the Melbourne to Warrnambool train service in Camperdown and Warrnambool. 

To reach the region via public transport from Melbourne:

  • For hinterland towns, connect with bus services in Camperdown (Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday only) and Warrnambool for Timboon (Thursday).
  • For coastal towns, connect with bus services in Warrnambool (Thursday only)

On Monday, Wednesday and Friday's, it is also possible to connect with Geelong Railway Station, with the bus travelling the Great Ocean Road all the way to Warrnambool. This bus stops at Apollo Bay, Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge for short breaks.
