About the listing

Where & When:

Melba Gully (35 minutes east of the 12 Apostles) provides a fitting end to our nightly spectacular. The deep rain forest is home to colonies of glow worms.
Glow worms aren’t worms; they are the larvae of fungus gnats.
Most brilliant after rain and on non moonlit nights.

Facts:

  • The eerie green light emanates from the abdomen of the larvae and disturbing the larvae by shining torches directly or touching them reduces the light and is harmful to the larvae.
  • Glow Worms are only Glow Worms during their larval stage which can last one year.
  • The adults don’t have mouths and for this reason they only survive for a few days.
  • The female lays about 130 eggs and dies immediately afterwards.
